Introduction |
|
Mathematics represents one of the
supreme achievements of the human mind. The subject has fascinated thinkers throughout
the ages, from the ancient civilizations of five thousand years ago to the present
day. It is an evolving, living discipline; the boundaries of Mathematics have expanded
way beyond the geometry and number theory of the Greeks and the algebra of the early
Indians and of Islam. Mathematics has been called the “Queen of the Sciences” by
one of its greatest practitioners, KF Gauss. This is more true today than ever before;
Mathematics has invaded the territories of all scientific subjects. Science without
Mathematics is unthinkable. History of the Department is as old as the institution
itself. Postgraduate classes, however, were introduced in 1985. The department has
been producing outstanding experts for teaching at intermediate, degree and postgraduate level who earned remarkable repute. The graduates of the department are serving
in government, semi-government and private sectors of both educational and non-educational
departments. In recent years the subject has undergone rapid growth in such fields
as algebra, analysis, number theory, probability, geometry, dynamics and fluid Mechanics.
Application of Mathematics in technology, management, finance and environmental
sciences has increased demand for mathematics graduates in a variety of fields.
In advanced technology fields, mathematicians play an essential role in the designing
of aircrafts, power plants, transport, telecommunication systems and in space research.
In information technology, mathematical training is highly regarded in the field
of software engineering and system testing. A fully equipped and fully furnished
computer laboratory has been established in the department. The department already introduced computer courses to M.Sc and BS 4-Years in Mathematics

abilities that you will develop during your studies; these abilities are widely
valued by employers. The range of careers open to our graduates is very wide. Graduates
from UOS are in high demand from prospective employers in commerce, industry, and
higher education, reflecting the immense scope and application of Mathematics. As
a mathematician you may enter research, teaching, industry, or engineering services,
or take up a career that calls
on the more general skills developed during your
time at UOS.
